Church History

Our History

 A Small Beginning

In the fall of 1957, a group of fifty Presbyterians, many from First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, began meeting in the East Marietta Community House on Lower Roswell Road for worship.  This became the foundation for the John Knox Presbyterian Church (JKPC).

Shortly thereafter, construction started on our first building on six and a half acres at our present site on Powers Ferry Road.

The First Services

The new facility began services in March 1958 and saw a large attendance in both Sunday School and Worship services. In a special service on May 25, 1958, JKPC was formally organized by a Commission of the Cherokee Presbytery.  There were 199 charter members, a few of which still attend services today.

Ever growing and changing

Crowded facilities and a desire for an expanded program led to the construction of the Fellowship Hall, which was later used as a temporary Sanctuary in 1963. Later that year, a concentrated Sanctuary building effort was begun.

The Atlanta-based architectural firm of Toombs, Amisano and Wells was selected to design the new Sanctuary.  The firm was instructed by the Planning Committee to make the design "dignified, simple and contemporary, with the inside activity determining outside appearance".

Award Winning

The current sanctuary, erected in 1967, which was designed by Joseph Amisano for Toombs, Amisano and Wells, Architects, won the 1967 AIA Award, the only church in the nation to receive the award that year.

Love Centered

From our on campus ministries, to our community outreach programs, JKPC's goal is to spread the love of Jesus Christ.

Future Focused

With the limitless opportunities that the future holds, JKPC's presence and outreach in Cobb County will continue to expand and prosper in its efforts to serve the community and the world through God's gift of Jesus Christ.
Our pastor is a true Bible scholar and a wonderful story teller. We love him!

John Knox is wonderfully warm and inviting. There is a family feel where you can be who you are and share in God’s story. I have been a member since 2000 and I love it.

The congregation and leaders care about those in need and act on that concern.
